Why I Built Vidmend

AI video upscaling was expensive, tied to subscriptions, and difficult to evaluate before paying. Vidmend started with a simpler promise.

ORIGINAL
ENHANCED
The product starts with a simple idea: you should be able to compare the same moment before deciding what it is worth.

I started Vidmend because a simple task felt unnecessarily hard: take a video that matters, improve it with AI, and know what you will get before paying.

The tools existed. The straightforward way to use them did not.

The problem was not a lack of tools

AI video enhancement is already a crowded space. Many products combine restoration with image generation, avatars, voice tools, editing suites, and large pools of credits. That breadth can be useful, but it can also make a small, personal job feel like the wrong reason to buy another plan.

I did not want a new creative subscription. I wanted to improve a few videos I cared about.

Pricing was often difficult to translate into a finished result. A plan might advertise thousands of credits without making it obvious how much footage those credits would restore, how long processing would take, or whether the result would be worth keeping.

For something visual, the buying decision should be visual too.

You should not have to subscribe to answer one question

The question is not “Does this model have an impressive name?” It is “Will this make my video meaningfully better?”

That answer depends on the source. Compression, resolution, motion, lighting, faces, and the age of the footage all matter. A polished demonstration using someone else’s ideal clip cannot answer the question for your video.

Vidmend is being built around a different sequence:

  1. Choose your own video.
  2. Enhance a short preview.
  3. Compare the original and enhanced versions at the same moment.
  4. See the price before committing to the complete export.

The first five seconds are meant to do more than demonstrate that the system works. They give you evidence.

A focused restoration workflow

Vidmend is not trying to become an everything-AI suite. The job is narrower: help an old, compressed, or hard-to-watch video become clearer while keeping the original untouched.

The experience is designed for iPhone because that is where many of these videos already live. Choose a clip from Photos, preview the change, select the restoration strength, and export a separate enhanced copy.

The comparison matters as much as the model. Original and enhanced footage should stay synchronized so you can inspect faces, texture, movement, and artifacts instead of relying on a dramatic marketing transition.

Building the cost into the product

Video restoration is expensive because every frame has to be processed. Modern restoration models run on cloud GPUs, and longer or higher-resolution footage consumes more time and compute.

That cost should not be hidden behind an arbitrary credit number. I am building internal forecasting and pricing tools alongside the restoration backend so Vidmend can measure real processing time and quote work more honestly.

The goal is pay-as-you-go access without requiring a subscription. A credit is finalized only when a complete export succeeds; a failed job should not become the customer’s cost.

My first project, built in public

Vidmend is my first app. I have been building it iteratively with AI development tools, testing assumptions as the product becomes real. That makes honesty especially important. Some policies, plan limits, storage rules, and production benchmarks are still being finalized, and the site says so.

I would rather publish a limit when it is measured than invent certainty for a launch page.

The same principle applies to privacy. Personal video can be deeply sensitive. Private-by-default storage, clear sharing controls, moderation for public content, and understandable retention choices need to be part of the product—not text added after it ships.

What I want Vidmend to feel like

The best restoration does not call attention to the technology. It lets the moment feel like itself again.

Vidmend should feel similarly quiet: choose a video, see an honest comparison, understand the cost, and decide. No mystery plan. No leap of faith. No pretending every source will produce the same result.

You should see what you are getting before you pay.
